In the golden age of the Super Nintendo (SNES) and Sega Genesis, screen resolutions were often 320x240 or 256x224. A standard font size of 16 pixels represented roughly 1/15th of your entire screen height. It was the perfect size for an RPG status menu—large enough to read but small enough to leave room for the game world.
The font has no grey pixels. It is pure black-and-white (or 1-bit). This is crucial for pixel art aesthetics. Because there is no alpha blending, the text remains razor-sharp on LCD screens, CRT filters, and even on 4K monitors scaled by an integer amount (e.g., 400% scaling).
