  • LittleBigPlanet PSP:
  • Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops:
  • Most modern PC games use dedicated game servers. The PSP’s Adhoc system is simpler and, thanks to PPSSPP, more flexible. You can play games that never had official online support as if they were local co-op games.

On a real PSP, "Adhoc" mode allowed two consoles within a few feet of each other to connect wirelessly. PPSSPP replaces that short-range signal with an internet connection. The Adhoc Server acts as a virtual meeting room: your emulator connects to this server, and the server relays data between players—even if they are across the world.

If you grew up playing on a PlayStation Portable (PSP), you remember the magic of Adhoc mode. Sitting in a McDonald’s parking lot or on a school bus, you and a friend would fire up Monster Hunter Freedom Unite or Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and connect wirelessly for cooperative or competitive play. There were no internet servers, no logins—just a direct, local connection.

Fast forward to today. The PSP is discontinued, physical hardware is aging, and its official online service (Infrastructure mode) is long gone. However, the emulation scene has performed a miracle. PPSSPP, the legendary PSP emulator, not only lets you play your favorite games in HD but also resurrects Adhoc multiplayer through a feature called the Adhoc Server. adhoc server ppsspp

This article is your complete, deep-dive guide to understanding, setting up, and mastering the Adhoc Server in PPSSPP. Whether you want to play on your PC, Android phone, or even connect across the internet with a friend in another country, this guide will turn your emulator into a thriving multiplayer hub.

This is the ideal way to play with a roommate or family member.

Host PC (The one running the Adhoc Server service): LittleBigPlanet PSP:

  • In PPSSPP’s Networking settings, set "PRO Adhoc Server IP Address" to that IP (192.168.1.100 in this example).
  • Also, check "Enable built-in PRO Adhoc Server" – this makes your PC the host.
  • Client PC (Your friend’s laptop):

Now launch the game. The client should see the host’s lobby.

There are three main ways to set up adhoc multiplayer: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops:

An ad-hoc server in the context of PPSSPP (the open-source PSP emulator) refers to network features that emulate the PlayStation Portable’s ad-hoc multiplayer functionality. On real PSP hardware, ad-hoc mode allowed Direct Device-to-Device multiplayer (local wireless). PPSSPP can emulate ad-hoc networking so multiple emulator instances (or compatible clients) can connect and play multiplayer games that originally used PSP ad-hoc mode.

There are two main approaches to ad-hoc in PPSSPP:

One of the most celebrated features of the PSP (PlayStation Portable) was its local multiplayer capabilities. Using Sony’s "Adhoc" mode, players could link up wirelessly to play games like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, or Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team.

While the PPSSPP emulator allows you to play these games on your PC or mobile device, getting multiplayer to work over the internet (LAN) requires a specific setup known as an Adhoc Server. This write-up explains what an Adhoc server is, why you need one, and how to configure it.
