At its simplest, Trapcode Particular is a particle generator. You feed it an emitter (a point, box, sphere, or even a 3D model), and it spits out thousands of tiny sprites (particles) that move, change color, fade, and react to forces like gravity and wind.

But "simple" does a disservice to its complexity. Unlike After Effects' native CC Particle World, Particular operates in a true 3D space. It allows you to use 3D lights as emitters, layer maps to control particle behavior over time, and even use OBJ files as emission surfaces. Why Particular remains king: Integration

Goal: Text flying through space with a comet tail. How: In After Effects, create a 3D Camera and a 3D Text layer. Animate the text's position. Create a Null object with a point light parented to it. Set Particular's Emitter to "Light." As the light moves in 3D, the particles trail behind. Use Motion Blur set to Very High.

This is where the layer becomes "Paper."

  • Texture Layer: Select your Paper_Sprite_Comp.
  • Layer Sampling: Set to Random - Still Frame (if you have multiple paper shapes in one comp) or Current Frame.
  • Rotation: This is critical for paper.
