The calculator operates on the principles of Sripati Paddhati or the Equal House System, depending on the user’s selected settings, though it defaults to the standard North Indian style diamond grid.
Core Calculation Mechanism:
"Extra Quality" Feature Highlight: The primary "extra quality" feature offered by AstroSage is the Comparative View. Many amateur astrologers struggle to understand why a planet moves houses. AstroSage displays both the Rashi Chart and the Bhava Chalit Chart side-by-side (or in toggle view), allowing the user to instantly see the shift.
In Vedic astrology, the Bhava Chalit Chart (also known as the Cuspal Chart) differs from the standard Rashi Chart (D1). While the Rashi Chart places planets in zodiac signs based on the whole sign system, the Bhava Chalit Chart accounts for the unequal house divisions caused by the rising degree (Lagna) at a given time and place. This provides a more accurate picture of a planet's effective house placement, which may shift from its sign-based position.
For example, a planet in the 5th sign (Leo) in the Rashi Chart may actually operate from the 4th house in the Bhava Chalit Chart if it falls near the cusp of the 4th house.
Before we review the calculator, let’s clarify the concept. In your standard birth chart (Rasi Chart/Birth Chart), the entire 30-degree sign (Rasi) is treated as one "house." For example, if your Ascendant is at 15° Aries, the first house is the whole sign of Aries (0° to 30°).
However, a house (Bhava) is not exactly the same as a sign. A house is a 30-degree arc of the sky starting from the exact degree of your Ascendant, not the 0° of the sign. This discrepancy leads to the Bhava Chalit Chart. It calculates the position of planets based on the Bhava Madhya (House Mid-point) and the Bhava Sandhi (House Junctions).
Why does this matter?
Most free calculators online use a basic "Whole Sign" or "Equal House" system for the Chalit chart. This defeats the purpose. AstroSage’s "Extra Quality" setting refers to their proprietary use of the Sripati Paddhati combined with a dynamic adjustment for latitude.
Here is what the "Extra Quality" mode does differently:
