Bokep — Santri Mesum Exclusive
Anthropologist Clifford Geertz famously divided Javanese society into Abangan (nominal Muslims leaning toward animism), Priyayi (Hindu-Buddhist aristocrats), and Santri (orthodox Muslims). Today, the "Exclusive Santri" refers to a demographic that prioritizes ushul al-din (fundamental principles) with strict literal interpretations.
Unlike Santri Liberal or Santri Kultural (cultural santri who engage with local traditions like Gamelan or Wayang), the exclusive Santri often:
This exclusivity is not inherently negative—it preserves religious purity. However, in a nation founded on Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), it often creates friction.
| Do | Don't | |----|-------| | Respect the kyai – greet with salam and lower your posture slightly. | Enter a pesantren during prayer times or tahlilan without invitation. | | Ask about their kitab studies – they appreciate genuine curiosity. | Question the logic of tawassul (praying through intermediaries) – it's a red line. | | Bring food or donations for shared meals – it builds immediate trust. | Assume all santri are anti-Western; many watch anime, use TikTok, and study English. | | Learn the local pesantren hierarchy (kyai → ustadz → senior santri → junior santri). | Take photos without permission – some santri believe cameras capture the soul (ruh). | bokep santri mesum exclusive
Not all santri embrace exclusivity. Several reform currents exist:
Exclusive santri culture increasingly collides with national culture:
| Mainstream Indonesian Practice | Santri Objection | |-------------------------------|------------------| | Miss Universe pageant | Aurat violation, promotion of zina | | Valentine’s Day | Christian origin, leads to premarital sex | | National anthem “Indonesia Raya” (original lyrics with “merdeka”) | Some believe only Allahu Akbar is worthy of exaltation | | Civil marriage registration | Must be preceded by wali nikah and ijab kabul in mosque; state is secondary | | LGBTQ+ rights advocacy | Declared haram; santri groups push for criminalization | The term "Santri Exclusive" does not have to be a problem
This creates two competing legal moralities in Indonesia: the state’s Pancasila-based pluralism vs. santri-based fiqh. When santri form vigilante groups (e.g., Banser, GP Ansor’s rival factions, or FPI before banning), they act as moral police—arresting people for selling alcohol or for “indecent” dress.
The term "Santri Exclusive" does not have to be a problem. If managed correctly, exclusivity can refer to a unique value system that benefits the nation.
Solutions Emerging from the Culture:
The most acute issue is the rise of digital takfir (excommunication). Using apps like TikTok and YouTube Shorts, Exclusive santri influencers label fellow Muslims—particularly traditionalist Abangan or modernist Muhammadiyah members—as kafir for celebrating local customs (e.g., selamatan for harvests or births). This has led to real-world consequences: blocked marriage proposals, boycotts of businesses owned by "non-Santri-labeled" Muslims, and even physical clashes in cities like Solo and Depok.
The BAZNAS (National Alms Agency) should redirect zakat (alms) from elite exclusive centers to traditional pesantren. When exclusive santri see that 80% of their zakat goes to luxury infrastructure, a moral reform movement may emerge.
