Created by Álex Pina (who later created Money Heist) and Iván Escobar, the series was produced by Globomedia. The first episode was directed by Sandra Gallego and runs approximately 77 minutes.

The premiere was a massive success in Spain, helping the show secure a dedicated fanbase. Critics and audiences often compared its "locked-room" mystery and survival themes to the American hit series Lost. While some viewers criticized its "telenovela" romantic tropes, others praised its high production values and ambitious sci-fi premise for Spanish television at the time.

El episodio comienza en el Estrella Polar, un lujoso velero escuela donde un grupo de cadetes y profesores realizan un crucero de formación. Todo parece normal: peleas entre estudiantes, coqueteos, y la típica tensión adolescente. Sin embargo, hay un detalle inquietante: han perdido contacto con tierra.

Cuando se emitió el capítulo 1 de El Barco temporada 1 el 17 de enero de 2011, Antena 3 esperaba un buen recibimiento, pero no lo que ocurrió: 4.5 millones de espectadores y un 23.7% de share, líder indiscutible en su franja horaria.

La crítica alabó la audacia de comenzar con un apocalipsis en el primer episodio (en lugar de alargar el misterio). El País escribió: “¿Perdidos en el mar? Más bien ‘Perdidos’ pero con más adrenalina y menos humo. El Barco ha encontrado su rumbo desde el minuto uno” .
