Frosthaven Hive Guide -

If you’ve opened the massive box of Frosthaven, you’ve likely felt a mixture of exhilaration and intimidation. Among the eleven starting and unlockable classes, few are as unique—or as misunderstood—as the Hive. Technically named the "Hive" (often nicknamed the "Shrikes" or "Insect Swarm" by players), this class breaks nearly every rule you learned in Gloomhaven.

This Frosthaven Hive Guide will cover everything: from unlocking the class and understanding its core mechanics (Summons, Self-Damage, and Loss cards) to advanced builds, team synergies, and common pitfalls.

"The Hive" is often considered a "gear check" or "party composition check" scenario. Unlike standard rooms where you can pull enemies into hallways, this map forces you into a central arena where you are frequently surrounded or forced to split your party to manage objectives. frosthaven hive guide

The Core Challenge:

The Hive is a true summoner. Unlike the Gloomhaven Summoner or Circles class, which summoned fragile elementals, the Hive summons autonomous insectoids (Broodlings, Stingers, and the massive Bombardier). These summons are fast, hit moderately hard, and—crucially—they die quickly. You will re-summon. A lot. If you’ve opened the massive box of Frosthaven

Goal: Use self-damage to power massive single-target attacks and pierce. Key Cards:

Playstyle: You are a frontliner with no shields. You rely on killing enemies before they hit you, then healing via Parasitic Bond or items. You still use 1-2 summons as disposable decoys, but you are the real threat. This build shines with a dedicated healer in the party. "The Hive" is often considered a "gear check"

Perk Priority: Ignore negative item effects, add rolling poison, add self-damage reduction perks.
