With the files placed and Local_Config.lua edited, launch World of Warcraft. On the character select screen, click the AddOns button in the bottom left. Ensure "Halls of the Pale Widow" and "Widows Loom" are both checked and have the "Load out of date" box ticked (the addon is unsigned).
Log into your character. You will not see any immediate UI changes. The addon is designed to be hidden until invoked via slash commands. If all three work, congratulations
Type:
/hotpw veil
If the halls of the pale widow install was successful, your screen should dim slightly, and a dark, arachnoid border will creep in from the edges. A new chat frame, "The Whisperings," will appear displaying ambient flavor text.
If nothing happens, type /console scriptErrors 1 to enable Lua errors. Then re-type /hotpw veil. If you see an error about "Texture [...] not found," you placed PaleTextures in the wrong folder. If you see "attempt to index a nil value," your Local_Config.lua is malformed.
Cause: Outdated Shared Assets Library.
Fix: Uninstall Halls of the Pale Widow. Download Shared Assets Library v2.3.1 (hotfix). Reinstall Halls. Do NOT skip this step.
