Now you can play the legendary Optigan on your iPad or iPhone!
The Optigan, short for Optical Organ, was a chord organ from the early 70’s. It is remembered today for its unique system of sound reproduction using optical discs. These LP-sized film discs were optically encoded with 57 concentric tracks, which contained loops of musical combos playing chord patterns in different styles. Each disc contained a specific style of music (Bossa Nova, Big Band etc) which the user could control by pressing the chord buttons. Changing the discs was as simple as putting a new record on your turntable. Think of it as the 1971 version of GarageBand.
Despite this novel technology, the scratchy sound of the Optigan left a lot to be desired. iOptigan truthfully recreates that lo-fi sound. For more information about the original Optigan, please visit optigan.com!
The sound quality was quite low, even according to the standards of the 70's. We did nothing to polish up on this, so if you're looking for a clean, crisp instrument, look elsewhere.
But if you're ready for some audible patina, iOptigan is the right choice for you!
Forty discs were released, and all of them are available in iOptigan. These include all time favourites such as “Pop Piano Plus Guitar”, “Easy Does It With Vibes” and “Gay 90’s Walz”. The App comes with 25 of the original discs, the remaining 15 are available as in-App purchase, either individually or all together in the Complete Pak. Click on any cover for a demo.

A flicker of blue light danced across Kedar’s glasses as he refreshed the page for the hundredth time. In the quiet of his Pune apartment, the only sound was the hum of his cooling fan and the frantic clicking of his mouse.
He wasn't looking for a Hollywood blockbuster or a Bollywood masala flick. He was looking for The Legend of Raigad, a "Marathi Exclusive" that had vanished from theaters decades ago and was rumored to be lost to time. The forums whispered that only one corner of the internet held the key: HD Hub 4 You.
To the average user, it was just another site. To Kedar, a film preservationist by day and digital scout by night, it was a digital labyrinth.
"Come on," he muttered, his eyes scanning the chaotic sidebar of "Exclusive Marathi High-Bitrate" uploads. Playback :
He clicked a flickering banner. Redirect. He bypassed a pop-up for a VPN he already owned. Redirect. Finally, the page loaded.
There it was. A thumbnail of a weathered saffron flag against a stormy sky. The file size was massive—an uncompressed scan from an original 35mm print. The uploader’s name was simply ‘The Archivist’.
Kedar hit download. The progress bar crawled like a tired soldier. 1%... 5%... 12%.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. He ignored it, his eyes glued to the screen. 18%. The phone buzzed again. Then his landline rang. Then, a sharp, rhythmic knock echoed at his front door.
Kedar froze. The digital world was supposed to be safe, a place of ghosts and data. But as the download hit 99%, the power in his apartment flickered and died.
The room plunged into darkness, save for the laptop screen, which remained lit, powered by its battery. The progress bar turned green. Download Complete.
He didn't open the file. He couldn't. The knocking at the door had stopped, replaced by a low, gravelly voice speaking in an archaic, poetic dialect of Marathi—the exact same dialogue from the movie's opening scene.
"The doors of the fort are closed, Kedar. But you invited the guest in."
Kedar looked at his laptop. The "HD Hub" tab was gone. In its place was a single text file that had opened itself: Some stories aren't meant to be watched. They are meant to be lived.
Slowly, the handle of his front door began to turn. Kedar realized then that "Marathi Exclusive" didn't mean it was hard to find. It meant he was the only one chosen to host it.
