Icom Ui7 Am Fm Unit Install May 2026

This is the scary part, but it’s easy. Use your plastic pry bar to gently pop up the factory speaker grille on the top-center of your dash. It is held in by four metal clips. Do not yank it; lift slowly and disconnect the factory speaker wire harness (if present).

  • Scan for AM/FM bands:
  • Store presets: Use the VHF radio’s channel up/down keys to tune, then hold a number key (1-9) to save a station.
  • The UI7 requires a clean, dedicated 12V DC supply. Do not share a ground wire with a windlass or bilge pump.

Fuse: Install a 1A or 2A inline fuse (as per Icom specs) within 6 inches of the power source.

Before the UI-7, my ID-4100A controller was velcroed to my dash. It worked, but it looked messy, and the factory speaker audio was muffled by the dashboard carpet.

The UI-7 is a slick replacement speaker grille and mounting dock. It replaces the factory AM/FM radio speaker grille on your dashboard (common in Toyota Tacomas, Tundras, 4Runners, and many GM trucks). It serves two purposes:

The UI7 uses a standard Motorola-type antenna jack (not SMA) .

Screw the AM/FM antenna coaxial cable into the “ANT” jack on the UI7. Tighten finger-tight plus 1/8th turn – do not overtighten. If using a splitter, mount the splitter close to the UI7 and use high-quality RG-6 or RG-58 coax.

This is where people get confused. The UI-7 has a male 3.5mm mono plug dangling off the back.

The Power Question: The UI-7 is passive. It does not need 12V power. It is just a speaker. Do not try to wire red/black leads if you see them (older models had lighting; new ones don't). This is the scary part, but it’s easy
