Google has aggressively scrubbed most open directories from its search results due to DMCA requests. However, Bing and the Russian search engine Yandex are often less sanitized. A simple query on Bing for "Index of" "Contact 1997" 1080p yields more results.
Open directories are unregulated. A file named Contact.1997.1080p.mkv could easily be a 2GB malware executable disguised with a video icon. Unlike torrents, there are no comment sections or seeders to verify a file's integrity. You are downloading blindly from a stranger's server.
Many "Index Of" directories are abandoned backup servers. You might download 90% of a 4GB file only to find the file is corrupted, missing the final 20 minutes, or is actually a CAM recorded in a theater in 1997.
Contact is NOT public domain (copyright expires 95 years after release; so not until 2092). However, you can find Carl Sagan’s original novel and the Pale Blue Dot speech on the Internet Archive legally.
