The writing of Al-Mabsut is inextricably linked to the author's imprisonment. Historical accounts report that the ruler of Transoxiana imprisoned Sarakhsi in an dried-up well (an obus) due to a legal opinion he issued that contradicted the ruler’s desires or political interests.

While trapped in this confined space, Sarakhsi dictated the entire 30-volume text of Al-Mabsut from memory to his students, who stood at the edge of the well writing down his words. This feat cemented his reputation not only as a jurist but as a figure of immense intellect and spiritual resilience. Some scholars note that because he did not have access to physical books during this dictation, the text is highly reliant on his internalized knowledge of the Quran, Hadith, and prior legal rulings.
