The Conflict Kubo’s mother warns him that he must never stay out after dark, or her evil sisters and his grandfather, the Moon King, will find him and take his remaining eye. One evening, Kubo stays out too late while trying to speak to the spirit of his father. The Moon King and the twin sisters arrive, destroying the village. Kubo’s mother uses the last of her magic to send him away, telling him to find his father’s armor to protect himself.
The Quest Kubo wakes up in a distant land and meets two guardians brought to life by his mother’s magic:
Together, the trio sets out on a quest to find the three pieces of Hanzo’s legendary armor: the Sword Unbreakable, the Breastplate Impenetrable, and the Helmet Invulnerable. They are hunted relentlessly by the Moon King’s sisters, who are powerful witches.
The Truth and The Climax During their journey, Kubo learns that Beetle was once Hanzo, his father, who was cursed by the Moon King. Tragically, both Monkey (his mother's spirit) and Beetle (his father) sacrifice themselves to protect Kubo from the sisters.
Facing his grandfather, the Moon King, alone, Kubo realizes that the armor is not enough. The Moon King wants to blind Kubo to make him "cold and perfect" like the moon. Kubo rejects this, choosing to remain human. He removes the strings from his shamisen—representing his mother, father, and himself—and uses the magic of memory and love to defeat the Moon King, stripping him of his powers and turning him into a mortal old man with no memory of his evil past.
The Ending Kubo returns to the village. Using his magic, he creates a giant origami ship and sails into the sky to join the spirits of his parents in the form of stars, finally finding peace.
