Film Upd — Nayana 2024 Sigmaseries Malayalam Short
Do not watch this on a mobile phone in a moving bus. Seriously.
SigmaSeries has confirmed they shot Nayana using the Sony FX6 with vintage Anamorphic lenses. Cinematographer Vishnu Mohan (who shot the viral short Oru Madhurakinavin) is employing a technique called "rack focus storytelling"—where the focus pulls from a rain droplet to a character's eye to reveal a memory.
The short runs for approximately 24 minutes and 30 seconds—which is feature-length for the short film world. The runtime suggests a three-act structure rather than the usual "one-scene wonder." nayana 2024 sigmaseries malayalam short film upd
Before diving into Nayana, we need to understand the container. The SigmaSeries is an ambitious anthology project launched in late 2023 by a collective of independent filmmakers from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Unlike traditional short films that run for 10-15 minutes, the SigmaSeries focuses on "micro-features"—narratives that run between 25 to 40 minutes, blending the pacing of a thriller with the depth of a feature film.
The series is known for three things:
Previous entries in the SigmaSeries (like Orothal and Irupathi) have garnered millions of views on platforms like Manorama MAX and Saina Play. However, Nayana is the most anticipated entry of the 2024 lineup.
SigmaSeries is known for their airtight scripts, but they have been unusually secretive about Nayana. Here is what we have pieced together from the trailer breakdown and casting calls: Do not watch this on a mobile phone in a moving bus
If the script holds up, this could be the most intelligent Malayalam short film since Oraalppokkam.
