Before the download links, there was the music. In 2004, Ne-Yo was a struggling songwriter. He had penned songs for artists like Mary J. Blige and B2K, but his big break came when he wrote "Let Me Love You" for Mario. The song became a massive hit, but labels initially wanted Ne-Yo to stay behind the scenes.

He refused. He wanted to tell his own story.

In My Own Words dropped on February 28, 2006. In an era where R&B was becoming increasingly explicit and aggressive, Ne-Yo took a different route. He brought back the "courtship" aesthetic. He wore tailored suits, sang about commitment, and used clever metaphors. The album was titled In My Own Words because it felt like a personal diary set to a 808 drum machine and lush string arrangements.
