In My Own Words dropped on February 28, 2006. In an era where R&B was becoming increasingly explicit and aggressive, Ne-Yo took a different route. He brought back the "courtship" aesthetic. He wore tailored suits, sang about commitment, and used clever metaphors. The album was titled In My Own Words because it felt like a personal diary set to a 808 drum machine and lush string arrangements.
