In its original form, NFSU2 offers players a selection of external chase cameras and a single "bumper cam." This provides an unobstructed view of the road but completely divorces the player from the sensation of sitting inside the vehicle. For a game that prided itself on detailed interior modeling for its showrooms and garage views, the inability to race from behind the steering wheel was a persistent criticism. Players saw the painstakingly modeled dashboards, steering wheels, and gauge clusters, yet could never use them during actual competition.
