What Works (for some)
"In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above?"
These words, spoken by the Skull Knight, have echoed through the halls of anime history for decades. For fans of Kentaro Miura’s magnum opus, Berserk, the wait for a faithful, high-fidelity adaptation was a decade-long crusade. We dreamed of the Eclipse animated with the fluidity of modern cinema. We wanted the conviction of Guts’ struggle rendered in breathtaking detail. nonton berserk 2016
When Berserk (2016) arrived, however, it didn't bring salvation. It brought a schism. It forced the community to confront a difficult question: Can a story survive the failure of its medium?
Looking back at the 2016 adaptation is not just about criticizing CG models; it about understanding a clash between artistic intent and industrial reality. It is a case study in how how we tell a story is just as vital as the story itself.
Do not start with the 2016 anime if you are new to the story.
The 2016 anime (and the 2017 sequel) assume you have already seen the 1997 anime or read the Manga. They skip the "Black Swordsman Arc" and the "Golden Age Arc" (the backstory of Guts, Griffith, and the Band of the Hawk). Sound Design
If you start with 2016, you will be confused about who the characters are, why Guts has a metal arm, who the demon god is, and what the Brand of Sacrifice does.
If the visual direction failed the story, the audio design saved it. This is where the 2016 adaptation demands credit.
The casting was nothing short of brilliant. Hiroaki Iwanaga as Guts did not just voice a character; he voiced a beast. His guttural, strained screams during battle sequences conveyed the physical toll of the Dragon Slayer in a way the animation often failed to show. When Guts roared in pain from the Brand, you felt it in your chest.
Furthermore, the soundtrack, composed by Shiro Sagisu (of Evangelion fame) and Susumu Hirasawa, was haunting. Hirasawa’s "Hai yo" and "Ash Crow" are quintessential Berserk tracks—ethereal, melancholic, and desperate. The dissonance between the beautiful, haunting music and the clunky visuals created a strange, almost surreal experience. It was as if the music understood the gravity of Miura’s work, even if the animators struggled to render it. Story & Pacing
