Let us imagine Macaco Hípico, a dark bay gelding foaled in 2014 at a small stud farm near São Paulo. His sire was a minor stakes winner imported from Argentina; his dam, an unraced mare named Mico Leão (Lion Tamarin). From the start, his name mocked his lanky frame and playful attitude—he would occasionally buck in the paddock, earning him the nickname “Monkey.”
Macaco Hípico was sent to Woodbine (Canada) for an allowance race on synthetic (Tapeta). His Equibase Speed Figure jumped to 92—a career best. Handicappers who relied solely on Beyer (which undervalues synthetic tracks at the time) dismissed him. Those using TimeformUS saw a “pace advantage” note: field collapsed, and Macaco closed from 9th.
This race became a case study in retrospectos: never judge a career by a single index.
