“No shields,” Gunnbjorn growled, pulling his longship onto the shingle. “We run fast. We kill fast. We take everything that shines. If a man stands, he dies. If a woman screams, she dies. If a child cries… we leave it. We are not monsters.”
His men grinned. They were monsters.
They hit the villa at dawn. The Roman garrison—three units of Limitanei border scouts—were drunk on sour wine. The Herulians moved through them like a hot knife through tallow. Swords clove helmets.
