Eärendil sailed into the West to beg the Valar for mercy against Morgoth. The Valar accepted his plea. As a sign of his ascension, they placed that Silmaril upon his brow and set his ship Vingilótë into the sky. That Silmaril is the star we know today as Venus, the Morning Star.
