Once installed, the learning curve is steep. Here is how to enjoy the SLRR Mod Pack without getting frustrated.
Because SLRR is an older game (based on DirectX 9), installation is finicky. Follow this guide precisely to avoid the dreaded "Runtime Error" crash.
Step 1: Find a Clean Copy Do not use a pirated version from 2007. Buy Street Legal Racing: Redline on Steam or GOG. The Mod Pack works best with the "Steam Legacy" branch (Right-click game > Properties > Betas > select "legacy").
Step 2: Backup Your Vanilla Game
Before you drop 10,000 files into your directory, copy the entire Street Legal Racing Redline folder to your desktop. Mod packs break things. You need a clean restore point.
Step 3: Extract the Mod Pack
Use 7-Zip (WinRAR often corrupts large SLRR mod archives). Extract the pack directly into your game’s root folder (where SLRR.exe lives). slrr mod pack
Step 4: The Config Tweaks
Open your config.ini file. A good mod pack will include recommended settings, but manually set:
Step 5: The 4GB Patch
Most mod packs include a file called 4gb_patch.exe. Run it and select your SLRR.exe. This tells the game it is allowed to use more than 2GB of RAM, which is mandatory once you have 150 cars loaded.
1. Extended Tech Tiers Vanilla Empire at War has three tech levels. SLRR expands this to five or more distinct tiers. Each tier unlocks not just new units, but new structures, heroes, and economic upgrades. Advancing a tier requires building specific research facilities on high-value planets like Kuat (for the Empire) or Mon Cala (for the Rebellion).
2. Massive Unit Roster SLRR adds canon-appropriate ships, ground vehicles, and infantry. For the Empire, you’ll eventually command everything from Gozanti patrol craft to Secutor-class battlecruisers and even the Eclipse-class Super Star Destroyer (depending on the sub-version). The Rebellion gains access to Nebulon-B frigates, MC80b cruisers, Starhawk-class battleships, and expanded fighter wings like the B-wing and E-wing. Ground combat sees new artillery, anti-air emplacements, and specialized troopers. Once installed, the learning curve is steep
3. Realistic Economics and Pop Caps To prevent spam of capital ships, SLRR introduces build times measured in minutes (not seconds) and significant credit costs. Additionally, population capacity is often reduced for smaller ships and increased for larger ones, meaning every unit choice matters. You cannot simply replace a lost Star Destroyer instantly – losses are painful and strategic.
4. Hero Unit Revamp Heroes like Darth Vader, Admiral Ackbar, and Boba Fett are no longer just “bonus units.” They arrive later, require specific conditions, and are truly game-changing. Losing a hero is a major setback, as their respawn time is greatly extended.
At its core, the SLRR Mod Pack is a complete overhaul of the game’s tech tree, unit progression, and economic balance. Unlike total conversion mods that introduce entirely new factions (like Thrawn’s Revenge or Republic at War), SLRR focuses on enriching the original Galactic Civil War era (Rebellion vs. Empire). It does so by dramatically slowing down the pace of the game, adding dozens of new units, and restructuring how and when you can access them.
The name “SLRR” reflects its key philosophy: Super Late Research & Recruitment. In the vanilla game, you can often build Star Destroyers or Mon Calamari cruisers within 15-20 minutes. In SLRR, achieving that same level of power might take over an hour of careful economic management and research investment. Step 4: The Config Tweaks Open your config
When you launch Ship Simulator Extremes, you may see a black screen or error log. This is normal for the first launch as the mod compiles assets. Press F1 or F2 in-game to open the SLRR control panel. Here, you can assign hotkeys for crane controls, lashing, and vehicle switching.
SLRR is famous for crashing. Here is how to fix the most common issues found in mod packs:
