Sumiko offers a range from budget to summit-fi. To find the Sumiko Smile Best, we evaluated three tiers.
Sumiko Fuji once said in an interview:
“A smile that you prepare is not a real smile. But a real smile can be trained.”
To achieve your Sumiko Smile Best, practice internal composure: sumiko smile best
The best Sumiko smile is never the main event – it is the afterglow of inner peace.
Sumiko cartridges are sensitive to Overhang and Zenith. Use a protractor (preferably the Stevenson or Baerwald alignment). The "smile" turns into a muddy mess if the cartridge is even 2mm off in the headshell. Sumiko offers a range from budget to summit-fi
First, let’s clear up the nomenclature confusion. The "Sumiko Smile Best" is part of the venerable Sumiko Oyster series. However, unlike the entry-level Pearl or the high-end Blue Point, the "Smile" series (including the Smile, Smile II, and the "Best" variant) was designed as the Goldilocks solution—a moving magnet (MM) cartridge that offers moving coil (MC) levels of refinement without requiring a phono stage that costs more than your car.

How does it stack up against the giants?
| Feature | Sumiko Smile Best | Ortofon 2M Blue | Nagaoka MP-110 | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Stylus | Nude Elliptical | Nude Elliptical | Bonded Elliptical | | Sound | Warm, Musical, Lush | Detailed, Neutral, Airy | Rich, Full, Vintage | | Tracking | Excellent (2.0g) | Very Good (1.8g) | Good (1.8g) | | Best For | Rock, Jazz, Vocals | Classical, Acoustic | Old records, Pop | | Fatigue | Very Low | Moderate | Low |
The Verdict: The Ortofon 2M Blue is brighter and more "hifi" sounding, but it can be harsh on poor pressings. The Nagaoka MP-110 is warmer but less detailed. The Sumiko Smile Best splits the difference: it gives you the detail of the Ortofon with the musicality of the Nagaoka. It is the best all-rounder.
Even the "best" cartridge can fail if paired with the wrong gear. Sumiko's warm tilt needs specific partners.
