Lakshmi was born into a film family (her father was character actor Major Sundarrajan), but she did not rely on nepotism. She debuted as a child artist in the Tamil film Kurathi Magan (1955). However, her major breakthrough as a lead actress came with the 1968 film Jeevanamsam.

But it was the 1970s that truly belonged to her. Unlike many actresses who faded after a few years, Lakshmi successfully transitioned from romantic leads to powerful character roles, eventually producing and starring in the iconic Malayalam film Chattakkari (1974), which she remade in Tamil as Julie (1975).

After a brief hiatus in the 1990s (where she focused on TV serials and Malayalam cinema), Lakshmi returned to Tamil films as a respected character actress.

Lakshmi is revered in Kerala, often called "Lakshmi Amma."
