According to Article 3.2.5 of the FIM Grand Prix Regulations, a rider must perform the Long Lap Penalty by riding through a designated "spoiled" asphalt run-off area at the edge of the track. The purpose is to add significant time (usually around 3 seconds) to the rider's lap, negating any advantage gained or serving as punishment for dangerous riding.
Viñales entered the penalty loop; however, he failed to complete the full trajectory. He cut across the inside of the loop, rejoining the circuit effectively on the racing line without losing the required time.
Race Direction deemed the execution invalid. Shortly after the failed attempt, Viñales was shown the Black Flag (flag with orange disc), indicating immediate disqualification from the race. He was forced to pull into the pits and retire from the event.
