The Pan African Medical Journal Instant

The Pan African Medical Journal was founded on the principle that evidence from Africa must solve Africa’s problems. That principle has never been more urgent.

The patient who walks into a district hospital tomorrow may have malaria. But they are just as likely to be suffering from a silent heart attack or undiagnosed diabetes. If we do not retrain our workforce, redesign our supply chains, and reorient our financing toward chronic care, we will have won the war against infection only to lose the peace to NCDs.

The stethoscope still listens for a crackle in the lung. But in 2025, it must also listen for the gallop of heart failure. It is time for a new rhythm in African public health. The Pan African Medical Journal

The Pan African Medical Journal (PAMJ) is an online, open-access, peer-reviewed publication launched in 2008 to disseminate health research from across Africa in both English and French. It covers public health, clinical medicine, and social sciences, featuring specialized portfolio journals and offering author services to support African researchers. The Pan African Medical Journal has proven its mettle during crises. During the 2014–2016 West African Ebola outbreak, PAMJ created a dedicated "Ebola Series" that became a real-time knowledge hub. Similarly, during COVID-19, PAMJ published more than 500 pre-prints and peer-reviewed articles from African frontline clinicians within weeks of the pandemic’s onset.

This rapid response function is possible because PAMJ’s editorial team is based in Africa and understands the urgency. When a mysterious disease emerges in a rural district, African researchers do not need to wait six months for a Boston-based editor to wake up. PAMJ turns it around in days.

PAMJ operates on a Gold Open Access model. This means that the author or their institution pays an Article Processing Charge (APC) after acceptance, and the article is immediately free for everyone to read.

Recognizing the colonial history of science, PAMJ publishes in English, French, and Portuguese. This allows a researcher from Senegal to collaborate with one from Angola without linguistic gatekeeping.
