License Revoked Fix - Vcds
If your VCDS (VAG-COM Diagnostic System) shows "License revoked" or a similar license error, the usual causes are: corrupted license file, hardware ID mismatch (dongle/USB token change), firmware or software update incompatibility, or expired/invalid license key. This guide gives step-by-step fixes and preventative tips.
How do you know if your cable is real? Open the VCDS software. Go to Options > Test. Look at the "Interface Status."

This applies primarily to HEX-USB (pre-2015) cables with a removable 93C46 EEPROM chip. The license is stored here. If the chip degrades, the license appears "Revoked."

If the firmware utility fails to see the interface, and you have a legacy HEX-USB+CAN (the old black box with a DB9 connector), you are likely dealing with a hardware failure. Specifically, the electrolytic capacitors inside dry out after 10+ years.

Do not open the main VCDS software. Instead, navigate to your C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS folder. Look for an executable named VCDSInterfaceUtility.exe.
