Vector Magic 1.20
Being an older iteration (circa mid-2010s), Vector Magic 1.20 is exceptionally lightweight by modern standards:
Unlike later versions that simplified the UI too much, version 1.20 offers the "Basic" control panel. This allows users to manually adjust:
If you have managed to get your hands on this software (legally via archive or legacy license), here is the optimal workflow for a clean vector trace.
Step 1: Prepare your source image. Vector Magic works best with high-contrast images. Scan your logo at 300 DPI or higher. Remove background noise in GIMP/Photoshop first. Vector Magic 1.20
Step 2: Load the image.
Open the application. Go to File > Load Image or simply drag and drop your PNG/JPG into the main window.
Step 3: Choose your mode.
Step 4: Review the preview. Vector Magic 1.20 shows a side-by-side comparison: Your original raster on the left, the vector result on the right. Zoom in to 400% to examine the bezier curves. Being an older iteration (circa mid-2010s), Vector Magic 1
Step 5: Clean up (Manual mode). Click the "Edit" button. This opens the manual editor. Use the "Erase" tool to remove stray dots. Use "Fill" to close gaps in the outline.
Step 6: Export.
Click File > Export Result. Select SVG for web use or EPS for print. Uncheck "Add white background" if you need transparency.
Vector Magic is a desktop application designed to solve one of graphic design's biggest headaches: vectorization. Manually tracing a complex logo or illustration with the Pen Tool in Adobe Illustrator could take hours. Vector Magic automates this process using a proprietary edge-detection and color-palette optimization algorithm. Unlike later versions that simplified the UI too
Version 1.20 represents a specific milestone in the software's lifecycle. It is often cited as the last version before certain licensing models changed and before the software moved heavily toward cloud integration. Users love 1.20 because it operates entirely offline, requires minimal system resources, and offers a classic, no-nonsense user interface.
Even a stable version has quirks. Here are fixes for frequent user problems.
Issue: "The application fails to launch on Windows 10." Fix: Right-click the shortcut > Properties > Compatibility > Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7. Also, check "Run as Administrator."
Issue: "Exported SVG has missing colors in web browser."
Fix: Vector Magic 1.20 exports in CMYK color space by default for print. You must open the SVG in Notepad and change colorspace="CMYK" to RGB, or select "RGB" explicitly in the export dialogue.
Issue: "Tracing a photo looks like a mosaic." Fix: You are using the wrong tool. Switch to "Photo" mode, or reduce the "Number of Colors" to under 16 to create a pop-art vector style. Do not expect photorealism.
