The most immediate benefit is speed. Standard PKGs, especially large ones like HD PSN games, can take 10 to 20 minutes to install. "Wet" PKGs, or simply transferring the game folder via FTP or a file manager (like multiMAN or Iris Manager), bypasses the extraction process entirely. The files are already in their playable state.
Because "Wet" PKGs (or extracted game folders) act like standard directories, they are incredibly easy to back up. You can drag the game folder to your PC via FTP, store it on an external drive, and move it back to the PS3 whenever you want to play. You do not need to "re-pack" or "re-install" anything. This is ideal for users with large external hard drives who swap games in and out frequently.
