If a friend owns Zomboid, they can authorize your PC via Steam Family Sharing. You will then have access to their library, including the Betas tab. You cannot play simultaneously, but you can legally test Build 39 for free.

In the early 2010s, Project Zomboid was sold on a now-defunct platform called Desura. A time-limited, feature-crippled tech demo of Build 1.x was available. Some ancient forums incorrectly label old archived versions of this demo as "Build 39." They are not.

Graphics & Performance
Build 39 still uses the pre-animation 2D character sprites. Zombies and players are flat, slightly clunky-looking figures compared to the fluid, 3D-modeled animations of Build 41+.
